or cerebrospinal fluids have been misidentified as leukocytes by the Coulter method.6,7 Once injected intrapleurally, some of the talc particles will remain in the pleural space for a variable length of time. These residual particles will frequently be mixed with the induced pleural fluid. Investigators should beware that in experimental settings involving the use of talc, total cell counts in body fluids measured with Coulter counter may be falsely elevated. Other methods, eg, a hemacytometer, should be used.

Airway Responsiveness to Inhaled Aspirin is Influenced by Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Asthmatic Patients
BACKGROUND/AIMS Many patients with aspirin-induced asthma have severe methacholine airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), suggesting a relationship between aspirin and methacholine in airway response. This study was performed to determine whether methacholine AHR affects the response of asthmatics to inhaled aspirin. METHODS The clinical records of 207 asthmatic patients who underwent inhalation c...
متن کاملOccupational asthma caused by inhalation of bovine serum albumin powder
Bovine serum albumin (BSA), which is present in bovine plasma, is one of the major allergens affecting patients with food allergies induced by milk and meat. It is also commonly used in research laboratories. Although some reports have documented food allergies associated with BSA, BSA-induced occupational asthma has not been reported. We report a case of occupational asthma and rhinitis in a l...
متن کاملInhibition of aspirin-induced bronchoconstriction by sodium cromoglycate inhalation.
Five patients with asthma and severe aspirin hypersensitivity were challenged on separate days with increasing doses of aspirin given by mouth, starting with 5 mg, until a reduction in FEV1 greater than 15% was obtained. Sodium cromoglycate in doses of 20-40 mg inhibited the bronchoconstrictive reaction not only when inhaled before the challenge but also after it, at a time when progressive red...
متن کاملIncreased levels of cysteinyl-leukotrienes in saliva, induced sputum, urine and blood from patients with aspirin-intolerant asthma.
BACKGROUND A diagnosis of aspirin-intolerant asthma requires aspirin provocation in specialist clinics. Urinary leukotriene E(4) (LTE(4)) is increased in aspirin-intolerant asthma. A study was undertaken to investigate new biomarkers of aspirin intolerance by comparing basal levels of cysteinyl-leukotrienes (CysLTs) and leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) in saliva, sputum and ex vivo stimulated blood in...
متن کاملOccupational asthma in a pharmaceutical worker exposed to hydralazine.
A pharmaceutical worker developed asthma when exposed to hydralazine, an antihypertensive drug. The diagnosis of occupational asthma was supported by specific inhalation challenges, which produced a late asthmatic reaction and an increase in bronchial responsiveness. No evidence of an IgE or an IgG dependent mechanism could be found.
